Final-year art students present ‘best show in years’
By Roddy Phillips. Press & Journal Art Critic.
Monday 21st June 2010.
You have to feel some sympathy for final year art students. After four years of hard work, they suffer the indignity of standing for seven days surrounded by their work while a generally mute public picks over what they consider the best bits. The current final year students are the 125th to present their work for public scrutiny, and an outstanding lot they are. This is probably the strongest Degree Show I’ve seen at Gray’s in some years. For creativity and interest it’s hard to beat.
Sponsored for the seventh year by BP, it showcases an impressive range of final year projects spanning fashion and textiles, 3D and product design, graphics, digital media, visual communication, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and electronic media. There is also a selection from the new Commercial Photography course.
Stand outs include Stephen Thorpe’s superb abstract surreal interiors in the stairwell; Fiona North’s beautifully rendered monochromatic figures; Audrey Jane Dargie’s fine art prints and Roisin Corrigall’s wonderful sledge and its documented adventures.
The Gray’s Degree Show is open to the public all week from 10-8pm until Saturday.
